"Cut it out, squirt, or you'll hurt yourself. C'mere."
Gingerly raising one hoof to the young orange filly's eyes, Dash focused, tongue lolling from her mouth in determination. Sat in front of her, Scootaloo grimaced, trying not to think about her mentor's hoof scratching around her eye sockets, digging away at the sand the wind had blown in her face; the sensation made her flinch, and that made her fidget. Dash didn't like that one bit, and she made sure Scootaloo knew, wrapping her free foreleg around Scootaloo's withers and drawing her closer.
"Quit fussin' around, Scoots," she muttered again, finally clearing the little pools of sand from the recesses around the filly's gigantic eyes. Mussing her mane a little with a hoof, Dash laid back once more, stretching out in relaxation beneath the shadow of her parasol.
"Aww, come on, Dash, won't you come play?" The rainbow-maned pony lifted her sunglasses from her eyes nonchalantly, casting a disinterested glance at Scootaloo, now bounding around with wild energy.
"Hmm..." she mused. One hoof played idly with her lower lip, and Scoots watched it intently, mesmerised.
"Nah." Then Dash rolled over, curled up, and dozed off unceremoniously. Had Scoots been a little older, she'd have cursed (everyone said it was super-cool), but instead, she stormed off in a huff, to join her friends playing by the shore.
One particularly tall wave broke on the beach with gusto, drenching all three fillies in cold salt water; that made them scream, but after a moment's shock, they dived in together, laughing as they played and splashed with each other in the icy autumn water.
From her cool spot on the shore, Dash leaned over and looked, grinning. |
