Trixie bit her lip. She could feel the tears gathering in her eyes. "Oh yeah?" she yelled back at him, "Why don't you come up here and try it yourself?"

Grassy smiled, and leaped onto the platform next to her. He grabbed her hat with his lips and flipped it onto his head. The crowd went ooooh. He took the deck of cards with his hooves and expertly shuffled them. Then he turned to Trixie, fanned the deck, and closed his eyes. "Pick a card. Any card."

The other foals laughed. Trixie's ears burned with embarrassment. With her own lips, she pulled one card from the deck, and turning, showed it to the audience. The Five of Diamonds. Then she put it back in the deck. Grassy shuffled, a showy grin on his face, and then shuffled again.

An odd sort of pressure built up in her forehead while she thought these thoughts and felt these feelings, but as soon as she realized something weird was happening, the pressure released. With a shimmering sound like her mother's magic, the hat's brim suddenly pulled down over Grassy's face, and he dropped the cards. "Aaaah!" he yelled, pulling at the hat with his hooves, "AAAAAH!"

The crowd gasped, and a few started to scream. Trixie's mother rushed out of the house to the over, and with a flash from her own horn, released the spell. Grassy pulled the hat from his head, then ran away, crying. "What's going on here?" she asked.

"Trixie made the hat eat Grassy's head!" said one of the other fillies, shaking.

"Trixie's mighty magic defends itself against those who would usurp its arcane powers!" shouted Trixie at the filly, pointing one hoof. "Trixie was born to be a star, and the heavens aligned at her birth to make it so! Hats and foals quiver at the mere mention of her name!" A tingling warmth spread across her rump. She turned her head and looked.

There, spread across her sides for all to see, was a magic wand tipped with a silver star, issuing a field of glistening magic.

Here's one that's been preoccupying me recently.

Alright, Unicorns can usually only cast spells related to their special talent.

Twilight can cast any of them because her special talent IS magic. Like Pony Mew.

But Twilight lives in a Library full of spellbooks. And the library of Ponyville is tiny compared to the massive multileveled one in Canterlot.

So do you think the spellbooks are just generations of unicorns contributing 3-4 spells they came up with or have there been other Unicorns like twilight who come along once in a generation and fill up a shelf?

Do you think multiple ponies can have the same special talent? Are Applejack and Big Macintosh's special talents both Apples? Or is hers "Growing Apples" and his "Preparing Apples" and they just have several areas that overlap?

Is the Cutie Pox psychosomatic? Did Apple Bloom get those talents because she believed she had those talents? Because if it isn't it implies that cutie marks actually enhance a pony's skills in a field.

Maybe a special talent grants you some spells immediatly, without having to learn them, but there are other spells that any unicorn can learn if they are talented/stong enough.

Every unicorn can learn telekinises, and probably the light spell that we saw Snails do. They are probably the most basic of the general class of spells, and something like teleportation would be a high level one.

Twilight, her special talent being magic, can learn them all more easily than other unicorns, and with practice and a teacher, can learn the spells specific to their cutiemarks, like when Rarity taught her the gemfinding spell.

This makes sense to me, anyone see anything wrong with it?

Another thing I wonder about is what exactly cutie marks mean. From observation here's a few things I've come up with:

The shape of a cutie mark comes from a ponies own mind as something that represents their talent to them. Twilight's cutie mark is her magic-explosion from her exam. Pinkie's are three of the balloons she put up at her party. Rarity's is the diamonds she found and used to make her costumes look better. Fluttershy's are the butterflies that rescued her and introduced her to the animal kingdom. And Rainbow Dash is her rainbow trailed descent from Cloudsdale.

Applejack's, since I'm high and already going off the deep end, is three apples, I think, because she saw the apples they grow and the three apples represent her and (at the time) her family. Three apples.

So obviously the manifestation has something to do with their mind and what would best represent their talent.

So it seems to me that Rarity's real special talent seems to be "Make shit pretty" and finding gems was just a natural extension of that. Relating to >>32118668 it could be that Pinkie's real special talent is simply making sure people stay happy, which is best accomplished if she know about any real danger before it actually strikes. Even when she lost her marbles in Party of one her reaction was to try and throw a party in an attempt to heal herself.

So cutie mark magic seems to work in that a pony discovers what they are already good at + enjoy doing, and then some kind of magic in their ass is activated and represents symbolically by showing something they associate with that talent, and then it also enhances their ability, perhaps even at a subconscious level.

And your idea regarding the cakes makes sense too.
