Ok, so heres how it seems to work.

There is no law about this. If you want a trip, there is literally nothing stopping you from getting one. If you are a good person, and interestesting, and generally don't shit up threads, you can usually get away without really being hated.

There are a few reasons which are sort of considered to be "accepted" reasons to have a trip. Being a contributor, usually artist or author, is the biggest one, because it prevents imitation and allows people to build an idea of your profile, so they know what to request and expect. Anything else where someone pretending to be you could also be harmfull/annoying is usually good too, like if you're running a quest, or making plushies or something.

There will still always be people who rail against people who use trips, and there will always be people who will want a trip just for the attention. This is 4chan, generally people don't bother being nice or consitant or any of the things that make normal society work. You can't really expect to figure out a set of rules that will apply 100% of the time.
