It was supposed to be simple. Applejack and her brother, Big Macintosh, were going into the Everfree forrest to see that god forsaken zebra. Apple Bloom was sick again and Twilight just couldn't figure out how to help. They made it just far enough into the forrest that sunlight didn't shine down too well anymore when Applejack heard it. A low growling sound. Menacing. Threatening. She had heard it once before. The growl of a Manticore.

"Big Mac, we got some comp'ny" she said, flattening her ears against her head and looking around in the dark. Sure would have been nice to have a unicorn that can light the place up around. She could hear Big Mac getting behind her and lowering his body a little, ready to kick out at the first thing that appeared.

The two ponies heard a stick break in the dense wood to Applejack's left and both turned just in time to see a massive manticore, bigger than the one Fluttershy had tamed so long ago, charging them. The siblings leapt away from each other, each narrowly avoiding getting clipped by the beast. Big Mac was the first one to recover and he quickly spun around and kicked his back legs out, making contact with the manticore. He could hear a bit of a crunch and he smiled for a moment before the manticore countered. A quick slash and there was bit of a nasty gash on Big Mac's back.

By this point, Applejack was ready to go. She had gotten to her feet and jumped up on the back of the manticore. Big Macintosh was shaking his head, trying to clear it. Applejack was doing her best to steer the manticore away from her brother while he readied himself. As soon as she saw he was ready, despite a bloody wound on his flank, she pulled the manticore back toward her brother. It's tail flailed wildly, but harmlessly and Big Mac gave it another kick, getting his legs all the way up to its neck. There was another crunch, followed by a gurgle, and the manticore fell to the ground.
