What I liked was this show demonstrated a common facet of royal societies - those closest to the top are often (not always, but often) a lot more personable than the sycophantic nobility beneath them. For starters, the security of their position affords them the opportunity to indulge without having to worry about what the others might think. For another, if they're strong enough then they don't even have to worry about others thinking poorly of them, since they're such sycophants that they'll fawn over their decision either way.

In history, a strong royal would often play the commoners against the nobility. The peasants would think of them as a man of the people, displacing any of their negative thoughts about the regime on to the aristocracy. The aristocrats, in turn, would be kept in check and occupy most of their time to trying to seem close to the royal power (and far from the commoners, which of course only furthers the Royal's game).

Celestia is the ultimate strong monarch, so that's why she's basically totally disinterested in the affairs of her aristocrats and uncaringly screws with their plans by letting her favourite student mess them up. Conversely, she's so powerful that any association with her is highly prized, hence the massively sycophantic aristocracy who're always looking for some way to gain recognition.

I bet if Twilight had opened with being Celestia's star pupil they'd have been universally beloved.
