By that I mean if not for LBYS she probably would not have gotten dirty nor would she have discussed her problems openly and honestly with AJ.

I think she was unnecessarily villified when that episode came out. AJ and Rarity had different relationships with their siblings, it didn't make one of them "worse". Those all being said, I think it's worth it to say that the characters do build off of things that happened in previous episodes. Fluttershy's determination to chase down Dash during ROH2 doesn't really make a lot of sense without us learning she had the capacity for it in Dragonshy. I think the same holds true for Rarity, if she hadn't learned that it's okay to get dirty for something important in LBYS I would have been much more confused about her being covered in mud and running a race; it would have been quite a bit out of character without that episode.

On a similar note, Dash is always going to be this kind of loud and bold character but she probably won't get extremely arrogant again.

I think it's only natural to assume Twilight is the smartest as far as book smarts.

AJ is probably the most down to earth and motherly, and most likely has the best street smarts. Rarity does too I guess, but since AJ is generally the straight man in the group of ponies she's easier to label as the one best grounded in reality.

It helps to have a character like AJ in the show. Gives the more wacky characters like Rarity and Dash someone to play off of.
