Yes, it is my assumption that whatever force manifests a cutie mark, it does it based on the thoughts and perceptions of the one getting the mark. As in, you get the mark that symbolizes A in whatever way best works for your view of A. Though I don't think the individual chooses the mark's subject, to be clear. They just indirectly dictate it's final visual design.

As for everyone having a talent, I doubt that's the rule. I'd imagine the cutie mark force just picks whatever is the most prominent aspect of the subject. For one with many passions, it's whatever is foremost. For one apathetic about everything, it's whatever they're ultimately the least apathetic about. In other words, not all cutie marks are equal in significance.

I wasn't bothered as much by that. The other five telegraphed that they needed to have the subtlety of a sledgehammer in order to get their point across to Rainbow Dash. And even then, when they finally explained their motivations to her, it took her a few seconds before she said, "Oh, I get it now!"

I like her as being somewhat more immature morally and, in some respects, mentally compared to her friends (even Pinkie has better sense than her when it comes to the qualities of being a good friend). It gives her a nice platform to build up from, even if it doesn't necessarily go anywhere.

Dash was arrogant, sure, but she wanted to help ponies - the Mare Do Well, judging by the sort of accidents that were occurring and the eerie appropriateness of each pony playing the role at the time, may have been engineering accidents solely to upstage Dash in order to prove a point. The way it works for the ponies is that it represents what they are, their deepest nature - it doesn't influence them, they influence it. Without it they might have fallen off the path, but I think it's basically like a compass - it points towards the goal, and ponies can follow it or not. Humans are already surprisingly similar to Cutie Mark-bearing ponies, the only difference is that they eventually have who they are emblazoned on their flanks.
