I honestly don't see how people could consider this the worst episode, even of the season.
It wasn't worse than Lesson Zero, or whatever the Sweetie Belle episode was.

And it's certainly better than quite a few of Season 1's episodes. Way better than the Gilda episode, as well as the Diamond Dogs. Better than Over the Barrel, and the Owl episode as well.

Dash was more in character than in ep 7, Rarity was, no doubt, in character. The rest of them? To me it seemed completely fair what they did, since Dash wouldn't have listened to sheer reasoning. Pinkie was being Pinkie, AJ might have been a bit overboard with naming her hooves, and we've seen Twilight doing powerful magick.
All the stupid fanon people are trying to push is contradicted directly within the episode too, I guess that's another plus.

I didn't like this episode all that much. It showed that the citizens of Ponyville are incredibly fickle and have incredible ADD when it comes to those who protect them. RD, from what the episode implied, was the towns' "hero" for a good while. Suddenly, some other hero shows up and they're all fawning over her like she's the second coming of Dagon.

The episode itself was moderately generic, as it followed the exact pattern of other shows who did the same thing. Hero is loved at first. Hero does hero things. New hero in town. Old hero starts fucking up. Everyone then hates old hero and loves new hero. The only thing different was that the new hero wasn't the villain.

I liked the episode. It wasn't the best ever but it was fun and there were plenty of great moments to it. I was also really impressed with the animation during the dam sequence, very nice and fluid (buh dum tsh) for such a busy scene.
