Fan Fiction isn't as "real" as writing an original story, but writing "good" fan fiction - like any kind of fiction does in fact take skill.

And there's the added challenge of making the characters fit their canon characterization, while finding ways to either subvert or add depth to that characterization.

In the case of MLP there's a lot of mythology and geography to be exploited for fan work.

I wouldn't compare Tolkien to MLP, but it's a little like we've been watching a show about the Hobbits living their lives in the Shire, when we know there's an entire Middle Earth beyond that.

Thing is, the actual most difficult part in writing is the beginning. Not as in getting your ass in front of a keyboard and start writing; I mean in gaining that initial impulse to begin unraveling whatever you have in mind.

Because even when you have a fantastic and complete universe with it's own inner laws and full-blown, developing characters with the setting and structure complete, the most difficult part is how to create the opening that will introduce your readership without making them throw away your text after the second page, because you'll have to spend more than half of the story in describing and exposing your world.

In fanfiction, you have the advantage of riding another work's momentum. You can have a great story and have just the right ideas of how to approach plus you don't have to worry about world-building or descriptions because your readership will already know it. Fanfiction, as a concept, is a great way of training beginners.

And as far as fanfiction being a good exercise for people learning to write, it really isn't. You'll never learn to write if you have all of the work done for you.
