Because there was literally no reason for her to be involved and having her in the episode might have made it seem a little forced. One of the best things about Lesson Zero is that they're going to be able to write episodes about the other ponies learning lessons without involving TS if her appearance isn't warranted.

Honestly I liked all of the episode because I felt like it showed a pretty real sibling relationship. Instead of making it all perfect and happy like with the Apple family, there were some differences between them and they got angry with each other. But in the end they still loved each other a lot and that's what matters.

Not to say that the sister interaction in the Apple family wasn't cool too, it served as a great foil to the Rarity family's dilemma. Just was a bit more idealized than most relationships are.

That kind of speaks to Applejack's character as a whole. She doesn't really have a lot of flaws. That's why I think she's best in these kind of roles, where she can go one-on-one with a pony (like Rarity or Dash) and help highlight the others' character faults. AJ is a pretty flat "good" character so the others play off her very well.

That's actually pretty interesting and something I didn't really pick up on before. Pinkie lives at Sugarcube, Rarity lives in her shop, Twilight lives in the library, and AJ lives on her farm. Fluttershy lives out near the forest with all the animals too, I guess.
