You notice the tone shift from Season 1 to 2, right? I mean the latest episode was a little more "learned a valuable lesson", a little slower paced, that sort of thing, but there's definitely a tone shift from one season to the next to go with the rating change.

Imagine if they were going to do a special episode, side story, special feature, *something*, where they change the tone again. In what abstract way would you be interested in seeing the show change?

Well, they seem to have been playing faster and looser with the animation, the pace tends to be a little faster (although the latest episode felt a little more like a season one episode), their plots are less formulaic (is there a formula for "goddess comes to town and scares everyone with capslock voice?), and they're starting to be influenced by fan stuff like Derpy and Luna.

Not saying it's bad, but the success of the first season definitely emboldened them to branch out a bit more with the series, and the rating change is pretty strong evidence/proof of this.

I saw the latest episode as a return to the old tone, lesson of the week complete with exploring parts of the main cast. The episodes before it felt like they were pandering a bit with characters we thought were never coming back. Sure they wrote these episodes a long time ago, but they are pretty different from the first season.

Rarity's episode feels like your standard setup of a problem with a lesson learned, like the older episodes you could kind of tell where it was going from the start because it has to follow that 'moral of the day' scenario but it was pleasant in the details.

She improved from Episode 2:5.

Season one was more sweet. Season 2 so far has been Looney Tuney.

Every "lesson" in the show always comes off sorta ham-handed but this especially so.

The outline Fluffy and I originally had for a crossover had the ponies playing through the areas, rather than being pieces of the game... but I guess that's less fun. It was interesting finding the corresponding puzzles and areas that fit for each character.

Anybody else feel that Rarity acted out of character in the last episode? In "look before you sleep" Rarity was afraid and freaked out but just the tiniest bit of mud. In this episode she is covered in mud at least twice and twice she just shakes it off with a smile on her face. It would have been better if she had finished the race and then after shaking of the mud let what she did sink in and then show some kind of exhaustion or disgust. This would have driven home the whole self sacrificing thing for your siblings lesson as well as Rarity's love for Sweetie Bell. I still really liked this episode. Especially the face that Rarity's Parents are white trash.

You have a point but I don't believe that She would progress to that extent. I suppose the line "Afraid to get dirty?!" In the Gala episode would be an indication of her becoming more comfortable around messy things. However, she was covered head to hoof in a thick layer of mud and didn't so much as bat an eyelash when she shook it off. One of Rarity's main character flaws is that she is a neat freak. By just having her brush off the mud like it was nothing goes against that. It also makes her act of selflessness look petty. Rarity's objective in this scene was to show sweetie bell that she loves her. The conflict Rarity experiences is with herself. Her feelings of disgust were conflicting with her love for her sister. Ultimately she acts on the feeling of love and runs the race without acting on her feelings of disgust. She was focused on her objective and her feelings of love overpowered the feeling of disgust. When the race was over her objective was accomplished. Her feelings of disgust would have come back to the surface after the realization of what she just did hit her. The scene would have been better if Sweetie Bell, after realizing it was rarity the whole time, would have reacted apologetically and pointed out that rarities mane was ruined and that she was sorry for this. Rarity would then have looked up reacted on her feelings of disgust and contorted her face. She would then act on her love for sweetie bell and given a loving smile to sweetie bell saying "I can always wash it again but I can never replace you". This would have drove home the sisterly love lesson.

I just rewatched the episode.

Rarity was my favorite main character and Sweetie Belle was my favorite CMC to begin with, and this episode basically cemented their position. The first part with their parents and Sweetie's cooking was hilarious. The second part was heartbreaking. Seeing Sweetie tear up and being upset was bad enough, but when Rarity found her picture I teared up myself. That's a first for me with MLP.
