Well I've always been a bit of an apple fan myself, but I wouldn't say I'd place her above Rarity, they're about tied in my head. For different reasons of course. I have a theory.

Dinky is running the race with her aunt, who is a good deal younger than Derpy. Probably around 17 in human years. I shall call her 'Wiggles' from now on, until I can come up with something better.

The Sisterhooves competition involves one older sister and one younger sister (the Spa twins are inelegible but were probably allowed to race with mom, or didn't live in town until a while ago), who do every event together. Wiggles used to fill the younger sister spot with Derpy, until Derpy got a job and was too busy with work and her sudden case of baby to run. Wiggles really really really likes the competition, since it's so much fun and she loves her big sister very much.

But Derpy is still really busy with her work, so she let Wiggles participate with Dinky. The reason she didn't participate herself was because she was too tired from running around all day to get done with work in time for the race to actually run it. But Dinky says it'd be okay, and that Auntie Wiggles could run with her! And so they do!

ta-da~ Dinky gets a cool aunt and Derpy gets to watch her little girl have a great time.

When they're off in the background they be come hyperboles of their regular selves for the sake of comedic value. Then, AJ steps up. She has to solve the problem of being lost, rescue Twilight and keep her friends all together and safe, each facing a unique problem in the forest. It strains her to near the breaking point, but she also shines with her leadership, cool head, and athletic talent.

In the end, it's AJ who all have to thank for saving them.

You know, this is kind of similar to a part of Ponies Discover /Co/. Only the focus would have shifted, obviously
