Here's a tip I can give. when you're in SAI, hit Ctrl+U to bring up the Hue and Saturation slider. Turn saturation all the way down and check your image in grayscale. This will let you see the full range of values, which is what creates depth in an image. The slider only works on your selected layer, however, so if you want to check a work in progress, keep all of your layers inside a folder and select the entire folder.
