They kept the gag with Derpy apple bobbing. They didn't cut Rarity out for time. The gag was unchanged. They cut Rarity out for some other reason. Why? No apparent reason other than for fanservice. They could have used an other background pony but they picked Carrottop. Why? Well, it could have been a random pick. But that's unlikely. And it still doesn't explain why they didn't just use Rarity.

I think it's more likely than not that it's fanservice. They've had fanservice before.

And besides. /co/ spent the whole summer debating about what kind of fanservice they would like to see, if any, in the new season. And the plurality of posters agreed that having a gag featuring Derpy together with Carrottop would be just about the perfect level of fanservice.
