Here's the problem I think. People are subject to what they hear from word of mouth, and fans of the show are generalized to fuck ponys, be autistic, and obsess over fanfics and art to the nth degree. This comes from trolls, but we can't forget on how they got this power. Sites like ponychan, FiM, and the like encourage habits and ways of interacting with other people that are for the short term, gratifying and indulging like using terms like 20% cooler, brony, parasprite, ect.

However, in the long term, as time goes on, people see these behaviors as annoying and irritating, and from no part from the trolls. It is annoying to use these terms and be overtly enthusiastic about your interest in the show whatever it may be.

For example, I know a guy who wears ears and a tail in class, and acts like it's no big deal. I know this guy, he's not a faggot, or a troll, or a bad guy. He's just a normalfag that thinks in a way that's harmful in the long term for everyone else. By satisfying his want at the time to act in such a manner, just having his fun and being odd, he leaves behind unwanted stigma in the minds of those he's interacted with, and it just effects the people around those people by word of mouth.

When someone says, "Who cares what other people think?", they lack the perspective of duration, of looking into the future to see what their actions have in the long run. This /b/ shit mess was the result of a kettle going undisturbed for the better part of a year, and culminating to the result we just saw.
