I think Rarity was really being silly and that one, so the writers could satirise the archetype. It was more a method for them to poke fun and make jokes than actually make any meaningful additions to her character, and it fits with her dramatic, woe-is-me personality in season 1 too. She was pretty much the same in Dog and Pony Show and Green Isn't Your Colour. The other ponies not giving a fuck was as much a plot mechanic as it was a sensible thing - they didn't understand the nature of how important it was to Twilight because they had no similar experiences or neuroses to draw on. They just thought she was blowing things out of proportion, like Rarity.

Who knows, with the next episode? It's just a case of valuing extradiegetic reasoning over intra in this one - the writers needed to make shit happen, so they did whatever they could to do so, even if it seems a little bit of a cop-out.

So, last night I had my first pony dream and well... it was pretty wierd.
AJ and Rarity didn't appear at all in the dream, but that's not important.
In the dream, the ponies, Spike and I got transported to a fairly sugar-coated version of Hell, I guess it was.
We run around, explored a bit, then the suddenly, we were at the end of the story.
RD and Pinkie were trapped in a house that, when you enter it, you can never leave. Fluttershy was just... missing and Twilight, Spike and I managed to escape from Hell in, I kid you not, a rocket ship with, I kid you not again, the help of the fucking Silver Power Ranger from the first series of Power Raingers.
After we flew the spaceship back to Equestria, the dream suddenly ended and I started a new dream which was the exact same scenario, but with the Simpsons instead of Ponies.
Also, there were bounty hunters after us in hell. Go figure.

Well, honestly, I think you were just looking too far into it. I mean, if you look back a season, there were probably a couple episodes that came off kind of weak for the season, but Lesson Zero was handled relatively well considering what it's intended purpose was (making the moral message not mandatory). For what could have been a really simple uninteresting story, the writer did a good job making the primary character, Twilight, look like she was absolutely nuts. I liked that.

Also, I don't think Sweetie Belle came off as stupid at all. She didn't have anything nice to say about the doll, so she wasn't about to criticize it in front of Twilight. It's a common cop-out tactic; find something you can comment on, then stick with it. Plus, it was pretty funny when Applebloom said Sweetie should play with the doll first because she liked her mane so much. That and when the spell came over her and she 'actually' did like the mane.

It wasn't just little details, though. This was her letter to the Princess. I could imagine that even a visit to town wasn't as 'important' as getting her letter off to the Princess. She's obsessed with pleasing the god-queen. If she didn't send her letter, she was worried that the Princess would look at it as failure on Twilight's part. The parasprites, while made worse by Twilight's spell, still really weren't her fault. The fate of her letters, however, are purely determined by her, thus failing to get one in on time could have been seen as a catastrophic failure on her part.

I will agree, though; at certain points, her insanity seemed a little bit forced. That still doesn't stop me from loving the bit where she pokes up under that bird's nest and laughs. That scene has a very special place in my heart, right next to Pinkie's insanity snap. Pinkie's schizoid hallucination scene is much higher up, though; the music and weird Ren and Stimpy backgrounds are priceless.

I think the problem is Twilight Sparkle episodes are hard to write: The Ticket Master, Winter Wrap Up, and Feeling Pinkie Keen were all more exercises in sight gags than solid stories.

Twilight Sparkle is kind of like Porky Pig: a "reactive" character, one who's at her best when she plays straight man to the lunatics she's teamed up with. When the spotlight gets focused on her, it doesn't work as well.
