I think the faces were pretty over-the-top, but with good fun intended in the way they're drawn. If I recall, though. a bit of the storyboarders and animators have a history with other cartoons that tend to do expressions like these a lot.

Derpy Hooves, Snips and Snails centred episode?
Ponyville is facing a crisis that started out slow, but (as usual) Twilight's attempts to fix it only make it worse and this time her friend's help cannot unfuck it.
During the entire episode, we get how Derpy and the kids try to lend a hand to them, but they are dismissed on account of them being "special". At the end of the episode Derpy, Snips and Snails manage to save the day because since their minds are a bit slower than others, they took the time to watch the entire problem intead of attacking just the symptom and rushing from one half assed solution to other like Twilight and company did.

Extra points if Ponyville's problem was a critical one (such as a flooding) but the solution was so fucking easy (such as closing an irrigation gate) and still the "smart" people couldn't see it despite being in front of their eyes all the time.
