Ultimately, the problem I perceive in Lesson Zero is poor progression. It takes a quarter of the episode to get Twilight Sparkle started, a quarter for her to get frazzled beyond repair, and the other half deals with her crazy plan and its fallout. To contrast with a similarly themed episode by the same author, Party of One devotes nearly three quarters of the episode to lead up to Pinkie Pie's breakdown. Pinkie also gets plenty of interaction with the supporting cast while building towards her conclusion; Twilight is rather passive during her jaunt. This is likely part of the intention for Lesson Zero; she's having conniptions because she can't find anyone that needs her assistance, but it has the effect of giving the appearance that she's barely trying. She doesn't even drop in on all her friends before snapping. I feel it would have served the story better if the episode had demonstrated Twilight exhausting all avenues of help around Ponyville first; a comedic display of everyone having their best day ever would have contrasted more prominently with her dilemma. |
