I like the assasination attempt idea. Seems like something Scanty and Kneesocks might do, making a wild bid for power like that. Celestia would be a choice target as well, given that she's GOD and that P&S can't go to Canterlot to come to her aid. But, do I make them plants of Nightmare Moon, Dischord, or make them villains in their own right? NMM sort of makes sense, she might want to have a way of getting back at Celestia for her initial inprisonment, though Luna might present some issues with that.
Dischord makes sense as well, sort of, providing himself with a backup plan for freeing himself in the event that handing over the Elements of Harmony to the Mane 6 backfired on him. Though to have those plants be strict, rulebound ponies doesn't make much sense (but, I guess in a way, that not making sense sort of makes sense for him to do). As villains in thier own right, though, a personal bid for power might make sense.
