It's an odd feeling, but It's like they leveled up after they beat discord. Rainbow Dash can now not only to the Sonic Rainboom whenever, but shit, it's an improved form. 1. the gags weren't force many of them fit naturally in... though i think the biggest offender would be fluttershy wrestling a bear in a fish out of water situation... but even that worked in context.

2. what fan service, theres some but its not overpowering the episode nor was it focused upon. it was just a background gag at most.

3. while the episode was rather fast it didn't skip any plot points and showed proper progression of the narrative, i'll agree celestia coming in and saving everything was kind of convenient, but then again the entire episode was about twilight worried about celestias reaction to her being late with her report so having their confrontation works as a climax.

the comical extremes fit the context of animated work and show that this show is still a cartoon. being horribly exagerated is something that isn't new either within the confines of the show.

I totally agree with this assessment of the plot. A lot of stuff felt out of character. I could see twilight getting into an OCD freakout, but purposely fucking with the CMC? That felt reeeeaaaaallllllly off character (but then again, we never have seen Twilight's school days. Maybe there were other reasons she had no friends). And then Spike moving the backgrounds? The 4th wall is Pinkie's thing. It wasn't terrible, but I hope it doesn't become recurring.

However, I felt that there was a lot of cool shit that helped keep the episode from being completely worthless. Fluttershy going all Mortal Kombat, Atomic Rainboom, just the incredible new feeling that came with the production team having less limitations. It felt like they were trying out some new things, and I liked them. When they combine that with an episode plot that's awesome, it'll be streets ahead.

I also like that Twilight won't be the only one writing reports. She defaulted to lessons her friend's learned before, better to just make it official.

Rainbow Dash is going to write terrible reports. "Celestia, hey, Sup? I learned some cool shit about friendship today, it was soooooo awesome!" etc.

The animation is definitely more expressive, which I think is a good thing. I'm not sure if it's smoother but I don't really give a fuck about that so the change is a net positive as far as I'm concerned.
