So Celestia seemed mad when she showed up, but she wasn't mad when she was alone with Twilight, even though Spike had already explained the situation to her. Then, when Twilight's friends ran in, she acted mad again. This ended with everyone being more mindful of friendship lessons, so that Twilight will be better kept in check.

I sort of feel that way. It's just that there was a LOT of crazy goign on. Arguably more than any other individual episode. Just about everyone is shown doing something fucking awesome, and Twilight is so deep in creepytown it's not even funny. Folks like their crazy in small doses. That's why bits like Flutterguy and Po1 Pinkie are as fun and cool as they are. Sticks out as something truly awesome. This time, the episode is slathered in it. Like the corner piece of a cake, there's just too much icing for some folks.

And some of this is compounded in peoples minds by the 'little' changes occuring. Twilight's pink magic, Mrs Cake and Scoot's voices, the new intro, and unless I'm mistaken slightly different animation in may cases (Granted it seems smoother, but it's a change nontheless)

Granted, I don't think that this detracts from it being a good episode, just trying to explain why folks might think that.

The way I see it, it works like this.

A character set herself up for a goal.
Fate conspires against her, so she can't complete this goal.
By not completing this goal, the character will go out of her way to make it happen, causing her to reach desperate measures.
When the attempts to make it happen fail, she gets even more desperate. To visually illustrate and convey this sense of desperation, the animators will use more twisted facial cues, because they're drawings and they can do that.

The fact that this is a convention that has been in animation for a while is why I don't necessarily agree with the "forced" argument. The fact that the animators of MLP are willing to do this is a blessing, considering all the stiff and angular Flash animation out there that is constantly on-model and doesn't push its limits the way more traditional animation used to.

It's something we should embrace, not disregard. It makes us look hypocritical to say we enjoy a show because it's animated in a manner that makes Flash feel like old-school animation, and then say it sucks because it's "forced."

I think the faces really made the episode. I've been fond of really bizarre facial expressions in cartoons ever since my Courage/Ren & Stimpy/EEnE phase, so to see them applied to cute cartoon ponies is unusual, but hilariously amazing. It helps that this show isn't as reliant on the "gross-out" factor but more the "holy shit this bitch is crazy" vibe, and it's kinda off-putting to see it handwaved as "forced" as though that's a bad thing.
