she smiled sadly. she hated doing this to him; he had to be as tired as she was, and now he was pulling the plough on his own. he really was remarkable, that Braeburn boy.

he took up the yoke, legs straining against the weight. she could see his muscles quivering, so full of tension they could almost tear through his skin. his dirty blonde mane was wet and matted against his neck, the sweat and the dirt turning him a bizarre shade of grey.

she felt strange, watching him. the dying sun caught on the sweat pouring off him, seeming to cast him as a golden statue. she'd been horny before, of course, but... this wasn't the same. she hadn't felt like this since she was a little filly and that boy behind her in class kept biting her ear.

she kept watching him as he kept working. he slipped, tumbling into the dust, but sprang back up a moment later, caked in dirt and mud. her breath quickened as he shook himself and grinned at her, laughing. she smiled back at him, but she was lost.

his tail kept swishing back and forth, keeping his flank clean. it gave his hips this rhythmic rocking motion; she found herself swaying to it. her mouth opened, a short, low moan escaping her.

    Topic for discussion:

Is Celestia appointed by the pony Pope, or was she elected by four secular pony prince-electors and three nonsecular pony prince-electors?

This is probably the most important question we have about canon currently.

she scooted back up to a metal pole sticking up from the porch, and started rubbing against it. she was going insane. he snapped his jaws at the effort, and she felt a pain in her ear. he thrust against the weight, and she gasped. he grunted under his burden, and she purred. she could feel something building, something quite far and beyond anything she'd ever experienced before. it was like a ball of flame inside her belly, burning, imagining Braeburn working that hard over her, tuning her body in synch with every microscopic movement of his. she--

"well, ah reck'n that'll do it!" her eyes snapped open, horrified. he couldn't be done already, he still had so much more to do! what-what-what about the cleanup? and-and that other thing? but it was no use.

he sauntered over to her, his legs a little wobbly from all the effort, grinning at her. she gritted her teeth. honestly, she thought to herself. chivalry is dead. she thanked him for his help coldly and limped through the door, leaving him out there confused, tired, and sweaty.

"huh. women." he shrugged, starting down the road back to his cousins' farm where he was staying the week, when suddenly he heard Carrot Top's voice from inside the farmhouse. "well, don't just stand there, you idiot, get up here and treat me right!"

jesus, it has been a while. ah well. long climb back to the top, ya gotta start somewhere.

Well, in the Holy Roman Empire, it was not uncommon for a Prince aspiring to become Emperor to arrange many, many royal marriages in order to shore up relations with the electors.

Things became tricky when you had to real with the three nonsecular prince-electors, though: as Archbishops did not have a hereditary title, nor were they allowed to break their vows of celibacy for... diplomatic reasons.

Still, I think you have a point.

I usually stay out of these threads, because to be honest you all freak me the fuck out, but I have two questions. You just answer them quickly and I will be on my way.

    - What time tomorrow is the new episode being aired?
    - What's the address for the stream /co/ is going to use?

Also, I think that 'Lesson Zero' will be something along the lines of not everything being a lesson. It will be a sign that the show is focusing less on the 'slice of life' episodes in this season and more on the big adventur stuff

Yeah I am not really familiar with a fanon personality for her myself, I just couldn't think of any other interesting and popular background ponies, besides Octavia. Although, there are already two duos within the group, maybe making it 3 groups of two wouldn't be bad. Then again, it might interfere with the feeling of it being a team. Too much focus on 1-on-1 interaction, you know?

Actually, Caramel might work. It'd be interesting to have a guy pony in the group, and he's beta enough to not bring any sexual tension into it.

Because as a writer it's way easier to create interesting characters if they have little interaction with the plot or have personalities that aren't outlined as canon.

Twilight is a nerd. Therefore if you want to do a good job of writing about twilight, you have to consider her mannerisms and the things she does.

Octavia could be some stuck-up princess or just a regular gal, we don't know because she never speaks. same applies for the others, mostly

    Because those characters have lines.

An alt cast would be ponies we've seen but have never actually appeared in the show. We can imagine them having other adventures behind the scenes because that will never interfere with canon, thereby making us faggots.

Well, we are still faggots, but in a completely different way.

Also you're wrong, Bonbon has 2 speaking parts, Carrot Top has one, (I think) and Caramel has one.

I had an idea about the aging process varying; some age as you have mentioned, some age faster than others, and some age slower than others. I imagine alicorns to be the most common of the latter, rather than actual immortality, they merely live for thirty or forty thousand years.

I wasn't sure how to incorporate that into Granny, however. I kind of thought that maybe she'd be one that ages normally, and her children had been one of the rare ones that age slowly (although, since they're Earth Ponies, this means they live for two or three hundred years unlike the alicorns), but the more I start thinking about this, the more I imagine Granny herself as being one of the ones to age slowly. Applejack, Big Mac, and Applebloom could in reality be her great or great-great grandchildren.

I suppose the whole idea of a pony outliving its offspring is rather grimdark however.

it sounds interesting to me! the thing about outliving your offspring isn't so much grimdark as it is just believable dark - it's something that sometimes children have to think about, because sometimes parents pass away, and i imagine the show itself may possibly broach the issue in season 2. nonetheless i like the way you've put it, and it accounts for such a large and varied extended family meeting in ponyville, where the nucleus of said family would be - so, yeah, go for it! it's pretty cool.

I see where you're coming from in that it's believable dark, but when a parent outlives its offspring, it's usually due to circumstances out of their control. Things like accidents, or disease. Of course, I suppose in a way, genetics are out of a person's control, but... I don't know. I just don't like the idea of a creature in such a happy land being dealt such a cruel fate, even if it seems like a likely possibility.

Maybe it's about time I write something that makes me feel sad before I even finish it, however. I do love experimenting, and this would give me a chance to see how it would affect the ending result. Give me a minute and I should have it ready, since I've already got the hard part done.

unfortunately if you want to write such a premise, you're going to have to account for that fact. and sometimes parents do naturally outlive their children. a child that is born to a twenty year old and only lives to see sixty, and dies of perfectly natural causes, while the parent lives on, is an example of such. point is, it's a cruel hand, sure, but you're the one who chose to make it dark - you can either stick to your guns or not do so, and it's really ultimately your prerogative as to which road you go down.

maybe it is about time, man. i look forward to it!

    >>30555898
it's all subjectivity, man. i'm a massive fan of a lot of things that are decidedly amazing in my book, and are both popular and unpopular. there is no unified concept of "average", even with a consensus, because there're always dissidents. you can't really generalise like that and expect it to stick, you know? some things are palatable to some and not so to others. the concept of mediocrity never really enters the issue except when something is completely ignored.

Velvet trotted up to Calamity. “So, this plan…”

Calamity smiled, gazing into her eyes.

“You want to turn the Wonderbolts? Help them see they’re on the wrong side? Give them a chance to become heroes?”

“Ayep,” he said, his muzzle inches from hers.

“You know, part of me says that’s… awesome.” She gave him a simpering look, leaning so close they had to be feeling each other’s breathing.

    “You have never been sexier…”

“That’s it!” I jumped to my hooves, floating my armor to me. “Time to go do the thing in the place!”

I was out the door, my armor floating behind me, Kage and Xenith trailing my gallop, before they started kissing.

The only thing that would give Caramel's gender away would be his voice, really.
In Best Night Ever, his voice is suprisingly deep considering the personality we give him.
Also yes Caramel DOES speak in that episode, specifically when Spike tries to hiyah him during the carrige bit. I mean, all he says is 'EXCUSE ME', but godamn his voice is pretty damn deep for someone who is rather beta.

and then theres the fact there's actually a female Caramel running around. They'd probably put her in a male buisness suit or soemthing and see if anyone could spot the difference between their genders.

Actually, in terms of a story, there is definitly such a thing as a BAD story

There ARE wrong ways to weave a plot where nothing make sense or nothing happens.
There ARE wrong ways to develop a character where they are arbitrary, inconsistent or inappropriate for their purpose.
There ARE wrong ways to present a setting where it's completely unbelievable and unimmersive
there ARE wrong ways to write dialogue where it seems like it's being said by robots and not people.

there is NO SUCH thing as objectivity in appreciation. even something with the worst flaws can be great. this is a view commonly cited by p.g. wodehouse in his work, who is, frankly, the greatest writer ever to write, as far as i'm concerned.

I have to agree with Terse and writer. "Objectively bad" implies that proof can be given that the content is bad, but there is no proof when criticizing stories. Take, for example, Tommy Wiseau's The Room. One can argue that it is subjectively bad, but not objectively bad. If someone disagrees with this and cites The Room's terrible writing, it is still subjectively bad, because many enjoy the writing because they find it funny.

It all comes down to opinions vs. opinions, which means it is subjective, not objective.

I went into this show being told that it was the newest great cartoon on the scene, and that it's from Lauren Faust, and that if you liked Fosters and such then you'll love this.

The show is alright, but it doesn't seem at all deserving of all this shit going on around its fans, either good or bad. It seems that if it isn't people going on about it being the best thing ever, then it's people writing fanfictions about pony sex.

It's still a scale, but there are different scales for every genre: drama, and comedy, in this case. When you put the item onto the scale for the former and the result is - quite literally - off the scale, you move it to the other.

Aristotelian thought would suggest that any writing is good writing as long as it clearly expresses its idea.

How good it is would be measured by how well it expresses what it wishes to express.

Thus, you could argue from an Aristotelian standpoint that The Room is poor writing, because it does not properly convey the emotions it wishes to. When it seeks drama, it invokes comedy, for instance.

Then you find it subjectively poor. The intent may not have been reached, but there are still people who like it, and thus you cannot say for a fact that it is bad. Wiseau himself has even embraced the following the film has received, despite being aware that they like it because of how bad it is.

If you take that standpoint, then nothing can be objectively true.

"From the Newtonian viewpoint, we posit that an object in motion will stay in motion at a constant velocity and direction until acted upon by an outside force."

"Yeah, but you're just using the Newtonian OPINION! Subjective!"

At some point, you have to accept one school of thought or another, or you just get down into an argument of saying lolopinions.

Aristotle influenced all of western philosophy. Is his viewpoint not good enough for a common ground?

    >If you take that standpoint, then nothing can be objectively true.

You are completely missing what I'm saying. No opinion can be objectively true nor false. Whether something is good or bad is an opinion. As you say, his theory has influenced Western culture, but a more accurate way to put it is that it has influenced the opinions of Western culture, and that is perfectly acceptable. There is nothing wrong with saying that you think something is bad, but when you try to imply that it is a fact that it is bad is when it becomes unacceptable.

This really comes down more to terminology in my eyes; if people would just say "I think this is bad," instead of "this is bad," then the entire argument is pointless.

Okay, consider you have a racecar, yes?

Your racecar comes in last every race, and you never have a chance of winning.

A man comes up to you, and he says, "your racecar is bad."

Your logic suggests that he is certainly wrong. It cannot be true that your race car is, in fact, bad at its job of being a race car, because no opinion can ever be factual.

    Let's take another example.

You work as a salesman at a company. You make no sales, rarely come into work, and when you do show up, you care away customers with your bad attitude. Your boss says, "You are a bad employee, I am going to fire you."

You respond, "It is your prerogative to fire me, but you are not right. It is merely your opinion that I am a bad employee: it is subjective. The fact that I am actively damaging your company and draining your resources as an employee does not make me a bad employee. That is just your opinion."

See how your argument loses merit when applied practically?

Exactly. It's a method of measuring whether or not something is good! Once you accept this as correct, you have made the first step in agreeing with me, and by proxy, Aristotle.

This is the same way you can measure, for instance, number of spelling and grammatical mistakes in a book.

Interjecting. We have to clarify the difference between an opinion and its source. The source of an opinion is often rooted in perceived fact, whereas the opinion is the interpretation of that fact. The source can be valid, but the opinion invalid. The goal of the whole of intellectual pursuit is to derive the most elegant, most practical 'opinions' (scientific theories that can change) based on the facts.

Your problem here is that you are comparing an item and an occupation to entertainment. An item, at its core, is designed to complete a task; if the race car is not completing its task, then yes, it is objectively bad. At its core, an occupation is yet another task to complete, and if the person in question does not complete it, they are objectively bad workers.

Entertainment, at its core, is intended to entertain. TV shows, fictional novels, movies, all of these are entertainment, and if they have entertained someone, they are not objectively bad. Your whole argument is basically "you can't enjoy what I don't enjoy, and this is fact."

In a nutshell, you are "stop liking what I don't like" personified.

You fail to understand Aristotle, which is acceptable, because he can sometimes be hard to understand for beginners, but you are beginning to see the light, so I'm willing to keep trying.

Let's go back to Aristotle 101:

Aristotle first posited, "What makes a human good?"

To decipher this, he asked, "what makes anything else 'good'?"

For instance, what makes a knife good? What makes an eye good?

He concluded that to be good, something has to execute its unique property well. Its use is what makes it unique. A knife is unique in that it is used for cutting, so a good knife cuts well. An eye is unique in that it is used for seeing, so a good eye sees well.

So what makes a person unique? A person can act rationally. Therefore, a good person acts rationally.

We can apply this same theory to entertainment.

What is unique about writing? Writing conveys an idea. Therefore, to be good, writing must be good at conveying an idea.

If you understand this, you now understand the most basic of Aristotle's ideas, which is great, because he is arguably the most important, influential, and greatest philosopher to ever live!

But that's insanely impractical, and even if it COULD be worked out, it could only give us statistics, not a single measure. People have differing tastes, so the best you could ever hope for was "X% of the population are likely to find this book above average", so on. You could never boil it down to a single measurement with which to objectively rank things on in such a wide-ranging medium.

I agree, we most certainly can. The unique property of entertainment, is... entertainment. To be considered good, it must be executed well. If someone is entertained, then has it not been executed well? Has its purpose not been reached? I see what you, and by extension, Aristotle are arguing, but I simply cannot agree. There are many, many things in the world that can be considered objectively bad, but entertainment will never be one of them, as long as someone is entertained by the piece in question.

I was forgetting we were talking about objective/subjective entertainment, not just everything in general. In regards to entertainment, you can still figure out what makes certain things work for a certain type of entertainment and what doesn't with some degree of certainty based on what amounts to trial and error, by having consumers consume it and judge it. That's why being an active consumer is important, so big-ol'-industries know what works and what doesn't based on consumer input (surveys, TV ratings, etc.).

He could have claimed that title or identity to get attention, negative attention granted, but everyone has their own thing. You can attempt to vaguely figure out where those opinions are based on (peer influence, upbringing, etc.). Not recommended, but if you've got a grant and too many TA's, you can do something like that to figure out -why- ponyfans like MLP:FiM, for example.

Hm. If writing seeks to transmit an idea effectively, and entertaining writing has to entertain, a good piece of entertaining writing must transmit an entertaining idea. However, what qualities make that idea entertaining to the reader? Again, trial-and-error media consumption coupled with some socio-historical glances at what works and what doesn't can help quantify this.

I see where you're coming from. There will always be at least a few sticks in the mud who aren't entertained by something. However, we can figure out what aspects of the target audience make it gravitate to the entertainment in question, so as to be able to reproduce the phenomenon effectively.

I see where you are coming from, and I would be willing to agree, if writing was not such a general term. The writing itself is intended to entertain; however, what you seem to be arguing is components of writing. Things like terminology, grammar, flow, these things all can be objectively bad; however, they can also do so without impeding the entertainment of someone reading the story. If the flow and plot are decent, but the grammar is terrible, it is still possible to enjoy the story.

Thus, the components can be objectively bad, but the writing itself - the entertainment - cannot.

This is the point at which it becomes unfeasable to do the kind of research necessary to guarantee entertainment by all in the target group. That is why there are still flops despite groups spending tons of money on market and audience research. Hopefully, in time, people just get better at said research so that the hit-miss ratio is a bit better.

This is veering dangerously towards 'there is no truth' and falling into the realm of out-and-out Buddhism/Platonism, where there is nothing objective in our world, at all. Oh, no, I didn't mean to say that NOTHING was objectively true, just that some things vary between people. I could rank episodes on how much I like them, that's objective from my point of view - they have more elements I like, and fewer I dislike. The thing that makes it subjective is that other people will favour different elements to me. There's a lot of objectivity in there, it's just not fixed for every person.

    >and has always (and only) been about the writing component

And as I said, I would agree if writing was not a general term. You can refer to each of the components individually and refer to each as objectively bad, but you cannot refer to the writing itself - once again, the entertainment - as objectively bad, because in reality the writing is merely the sum of all these components with the intent of entertaining. This is, of course, purely referring to ficitonal writing; obviously non-fiction can be objectively bad, but that's another debate entirely.

Even if you were to gather the opinions of every human on Earth on a piece, and they all agreed that it was bad, it is still subjectively bad, merely because it is possible that someone will come along later, perhaps hundreds of years later, and find something about the piece that they like and thus are entertained by.

I have enjoyed this debate but will not be continuing in the next thread, especially since we both seem to have reached a point of understanding.

    >varying objectivity
That completely defeats the point of objectivity, you realize. If something is to be objective, it has to be true/the same for all observers, not just you or the guys in the room. You have reasons that are 'objective' in that they are relatively set and rationalized for you, but another person could find those same reasons a load of hogwash. However, in more general cases (certain episodes over others), a large group of people could find certain aspects that make Ep. X better than Ep. Y. If somebody comes along later and disagrees AND rationalizes it well, then that objectivity is broken for the time being, but before he comes along, all is well and set.
