I say Equestria WAS once a full-on monarchy, but shifted over time to a representative democracy or whatever. Celestia keeps the title and trappings of royalty because a) they like her, b) she still has the very important job of raising the sun and b) is an immensely powerful and knowledgeable sorceress. After watching numerous videos on YouTube that were somehow pony related (TF2 videos where players were singing Pinkie Pie songs over alltalk, Heavy singing the theme song) and catching the occasional pony thread over on /v/, the bug finally got planted in my head. Then, for some godforsaken reason, Equestria Girls was recommended to me on my YouTube front page. I watched it. I decided to bite the bullet, say "fuck it" and watch the first few episodes, for shits and giggles if nothing else. Got about 5 episodes in and now I can't not watch it (double negative intended).

Fast forward to tonight and I just finished the Q saga.
