From what little extensive study I've had opportunity to do, and a supporter of the institution of marriage as a whole (mostly for the legal rights it conveys), I agree with you on a lot of counts. I don't like the barbarous traditionalism of a lot of religions, but knowing several homosexual couples (and knowing that anecdotal evidence is bullshit) who have both complained and supported the endeavour, treatise and rationale of marriage and civil partnerships, I can safely say that there is at least a tiny percentage of gay couples that just want to have the safety conferred by marriage as an institution.

As an addendum, let me clarify that I'm studying British marriage law a little at the moment - so I'm talking purely in a British context. I can't speak for Americans. It's degrading and insulting to homosexuals in general, but it's far less so than the way the institution treated them before, within the rights of their mandate - I'm a full supporter of further pushing to allow homosexual marriage on the exact same level as heterosexual marriage. I believe it is in a religions right to make whatever rules it wants so long as it does not involve on Government given rights, and by one of the very foundations of the US, government cannot regulate religious concepts.

The Government cannot pass a law requiring Churches to allow for homosexual marriage "under God." It is the right of the Church to decide how to operate and until it actively begins to limit the rights given by the government, then there is no issue.
