I was thinking about Derpy earlier, and I've seen jokes regarding her eyesight in the past, but only tonight did I remember that I can actually shed some light on it. I can move my right eye while keeping the left stationary, achieving a wall-eyed stare similar to Derpy's, although I can only hold it like that for five to ten seconds (then it starts to hurt like shit).

Now when I do this, I don't necessarily see two different things; I see what I would normally see while looking forward, only I see double. Now, Derpy's wall-eyed stare is much more intense than mine; rather than one eye pointing forward and the other to the side, both of them are off to the side. Overall, though, I think she just sees double of everything.

I can't imagine what kind of Hell that must be though, constantly seeing double. Especially when trying to fly.

Anyway, moving on to Spitfire, she grew up in a very protective environment. Her parents were pegasi, but they lived and still do live in an earth pony city. Like Fluttershy (although not as timid), they both feel more comfortable on the ground, but Spitfire was different. She always wanted to stretch her wings and fly, and the stuffy environment created by her protective parents only exacerbated this desire. When she was old enough to move out, she moved to Cloudsdale; her parents were upset, but they did not follow her to the town. Until living in Cloudsdale, she had not even been aware of the Wonderbolts. She aced her first audition, finding a natural talent for flight.

Quills & Sofa Pony, who I will refer to as Jebediah (because I like the idea of names that have been out of style for roughly a century and a half being used in Equestria) manages the store based on family tradition. The store has been in his family for generations, and it was ran by his father, and his father's father, and so forth. In all this time, they have only sold two items: quills, and sofas. When Jebediah was young, he would always ask his father why they did not sell more items, that they would see an increase in profits and be able to fix all of those tiny imperfections that plague the store. His father always told him he would understand when he was older, and he realizes now that this is true; the tradition is simply too strong to break.

As for Pinkie's origins, those bother me. I do believe that the rock farm was an exaggeration, but I also believe that the Cakes are Pinkie's aunt and uncle, and that there is a reason she is living with them and not her parents. However, no matter how hard the suspense writer in me tries to push me into it, I refuse to give Pinkie grimdark origins. Not even melancholy; it just wouldn't fit her at all.

Still brainstorming on Zecora, and Terse, I'll certainly give Granny Smith a try. Like Celestia, though, I think the way to truly do Granny justice would be a fic based on the Apple clan in general. Some day, perhaps that fic will be reality. As I said, though, I will try.
