I think with the electric cello thing she was trying to improve on her original idea, and capture more of the energy in her picture. If I recall the original was just something she did in an afternoon at her school, so maybe it inspired her to try something more detailed and improve on the idea.

The way I see it, either way, we can't conclude that Scootaloo is an only child definitively - knowing her character as well as we do, and knowing her obsession with Dash (she's the biggest fanatic in the show, after all) she may well simply be ashamed of her older sister, or not happy with her compared to Dash, and chase Dash as a sister out of wish fulfilment. In fact, that's my general theory for Scootaloo's hypothetical role in the hypothetical plot - she's desperately trying to convince Dash to work with her, while her "nerdy older sister" is desperately trying to win her over in kind. It'd be heartbreaking to see, and would provide some real dramatic strength to Dash's character if she enjoyed the attention at first, but eventually acted on the impetus to help the other girl and taught Scootaloo to love her sister in kind. It'd also provide a great moral about treasuring the things that really matter and not taking them for granted, if the moral plenaries are still a thing - family ties are the most important ties, after all.

I dunno. In my head-canon, Scootaloo is an orphan or foster-child, with no blood relatives in Ponyville or Cloudsdale.

I think she lives with Cheerilee, actually. Gen 3.5 Scootaloo was Gen 3.5 Cheerilee's little sister, so it makes sense that they'd continue the relationship (in slightly different form) in Gen 4.
