You can hear the vibrations from her sub-vocal oscillations, and feel them through the thick bones of those sturdy, working legs. Her smile is broad and warm; it isn't just one of pleasure, but of genuine appreciation for the time and effort you show to clean her. She knows she couldn't do what you do. Even if she could reach, she wouldn't have the attention to detail that you show.
You gently file the hardened bits to remove any chips or rough patches. It's purely aesthetics, but she knows you put your heart into it. You don't have to make those working hooves pretty, only clean and functional, but the extra effort you exert shows that you truly care.
Careful to clean most of the foreleg, your brushing removes not only the sticky sap from the fur and skin, but the ache of a long day of work. Supporting the entire weight of a strong, powerful mare is hard work for two front legs. She's openly appreciative of your work and soft, strong touch.
She finally relaxes a little. You can feel the tenseness fade from the strong muscles, and the stresses of a work day drifting away beneath your firm hands. Some days, these few moments are her only reward for the hard work in the fields; sustaining the family is primary, but what shame is there in enjoying the unwinding process?
She knows she'll have to be out there again the next day, beneath the hot, beating sun and trudging the same, well-worn paths through the fields, but your efforts are what keep her going. You remind her that it's all worth while.
When you see her smile, it's all worth it.
