Alright so I've been wondering about this for awhile, and I know there's no canon answer so I just want to hear some idle conjecture...

All unicorns can do magic, but most of them only know a few spells related to their special talent (and telekinesis is pretty basic too, it would seem).

Since Twilight's special talent is magic, she can learn to do all kinds of spells.

However her library is full of books upon books of spells she can learn.

So how were they compiled? All I can think of is that there must have been multiple ponies with a talent for magic throughout the last millennium. Or maybe they are spells for all ponies compiled by talent and it's just that Twilight can learn them all?

Also, what exactly is she learning? It seems like to do unicorn magic you just need to think about it really hard and the difficulty scales with how much effort you expend, like a D&D sorcerer. But if that's the case what exactly is she learning all the time? She doesn't seem to need reagents of other components like typical wizardry, so I'm slightly baffled.

Behind her, Celestia too climbed into the marble bath. She crouched into a sitting position and brought her neck down over Ruby's body, causing the little filly to sit with some surprise.

"Princess?" Ruby asked, uncomfortable with how informal the Princess was being. Her face grew even redder than normal.
