What, you wanted some worldbuilding?

I always figured that, since the dawn of time, there have been only two alicorns in Equestria at any one time: one male, one female. For an era, these two control the outer sphere, one driving the sun at day, the other herding the moon at night. At the end of their era (however long that is, probably a few thousand years if I had to guess), the male impregnates the female. This final consummation of duty ends the life of both alicorns. Then, after 70 days of twilight, two alicorn foals emerge from their dead mothers womb: one male, one female. Thus begins again the eternal cycle.
yes, this means that Celestia and Luna are the product of uncounted generations of incest. That's how mythology works, deal with it.
1100 years ago, King Sol and Queen Firmament ended their reign as their parents before them had. For 70 days, the sun and moon sat listless on the horizon while Firmament's body was carefully preserved by the royal priests, awaiting the new rulers' emergence. After 70 days was born the eldest, and she was named Celestia, and the ponies rejoiced. And as she came forth the sun rose from its slumber and rode across the sky.
Twelve hours later was born the second, and she was female as well, and the ponies were horrified. And she was named Luna, and when she came forth the moon rode high in the sky, and there could be no doubt that she was the second ruler.
And far and wide went the word: this was to be the final age, for the two sisters could not progenate a new line. And for no fault save that she was born a female, Luna was scorned and shunned by the ponies, who blamed her for the end of the world they knew, still millenia away and yet now as undeniable as a tide.
And that rejection was what drove Luna to adopt the mantle of insanity that was Nightmare Moon. And that dreadful knowledge was what drove Celestia to destroy all the ancient tomes of lore and banish the ancient histories from Equestria. |
