Now the full-body panic response kicked into high gear; my heart was thudding in my chest, I had to fight not to hyperventilate, and my extremities began to tingle. I could do little more than fall, however, watching the ground slowly rise up to greet me, and vaguely wonder if I would feel the impact before I died.
I needn't have worried, however, for the same invisible force that had plunged me into this pool of midnight and left me to my doom seemed to have taken pity on me and snatched me right out of terminal velocity; I was no longer floating OR falling. I was flying! I had no control over it, but I was soaring through the air in the most intense roller-coaster ride I'll ever deign to remember. As my descent leveled out and my mind caught up with my senses, I began to take in the landscape.
Flawless, beautiful, and untarnished by the stain of industry, unlike where I came from. As I was contemplating whether or not I would stay for awhile and get my bearings or fight to find a way back from the get-go, the rushing wind against my face died down; I was losing speed. A familiar silhouette against the moonlight came into view; it was the same gnarled tree that I'd seen in the photo only a short while ago, the very same that I'd all but fallen into.
Just as my flight came to an end, I heard a familiar, almost otherworldly noise, like energy building up and then releasing in a whisper. And then it hit me.... |
