Because as you get closer to c, time starts moving more slowly for you relative to an outside observer. This is a fact, time dilation isn't a sci-fi trope. When you hit c, in theory time should effectively stop from that outside observer. If you follow the curve, going faster than light would reverse time. We don't know if that really happens.
