What was possible for canon is that Alicorns are special breed of pony that came about every once in a blue moon. They're very rare and since all pony can interbreed regardless of type makeup, then it possible that an alicorn have the quality of all three types, meaning that they're strong, agile, and powerful in magic. It just that these two ponies where born with regular Pony parents, and not alicorns.

As for the Elements of Harmony, I'm still believe that those where originally part of Equestria as freeform energy along with discord. Discord might have used that energy to rule Equestria, so the alicorn sisters might have harness the harmonic power to create the elements to neutralize and imprison him.

As for life spans, a regular pony might live for as long as any sapient species. Alicorns might live for centuries, but I figured that the effect of the harmonic energy allowed the two sister to have a near immortal life time, until they ready to release that energy back to the sun and moon so that they can run their course without them.

It all have to do with paying loyatly. If someone elses works is used in a commercial product, not only that they want the credit for it, but also the cut for them as well. This is why it was forbidden in standard practice fo the writers of the show to read any fanfiction of any kind, for the fear of getting sued by those who creates them.
