“Does… um, does it look alright?” Fluttershy’s voice was even meeker than usual, the tone of her timid whispering straining to be heard, even in the quiet interior of Carousel Boutique. Her eyes were planted firmly on the ground, flitting upwards every few seconds for an awkward glance at the focus of her inquiry. “Oh, of course dear. You look wonderful, better than ever – er, well, that is to say, better than… you look fine, dear. There’s no need to worry about that.” Rarity’s awkward rambling was uncharacteristic, but she covered her faux-paus with ease, cushioning the awkward stumbling with a blanket of positive reinforcement. After all, what Fluttershy needed most right now was to feel good about herself… Still staring anxiously downward, Fluttershy lifted her right foreleg upward, illuminating the brand-new embroidery that wrapped around her limb, the pattern of bright jewels glistening in the sunlight that beamed through the store window. The white lace fabric and sparkling gems perfectly framed the end of her leg – the latter half, where her hoof would have been. Despite the intricately sewn patterns in front of her, the sight made Fluttershy cringe. “Do you not like it? I tried my best to make it look as lovely as possible to accentuate – er, to distract from – to make it bring out how wonderful you look.” Again, Rarity’s every sentence was laden like a minefield with potential hazards, stripping her dialogue of its normally austere eloquence. Tip-toeing around the situation was… difficult. Fluttershy shook her head in response to the question in an attempt to allay her friends obvious worries – as concerned as Rarity was with defusing the awkwardness of the situation, Fluttershy couldn’t let her friend think for a moment that she didn’t appreciate her work, even if… |
