Because if you're only believing in, like, at best, a few pages of the bible, are you telling me you know better than God what God set out to say? That you can safely ignore the vast majority of it and only pick out a few nice bits?
And what, the rest of it was left in for... filler? As a joke? Or, really, you don't believe it because it doesn't mesh with your morality, but you're still scared of the unknown. The basic, primal fear of the dark, except on a psychological level. You don't have to be afraid of it. You can look into it, understand it. You don't need a god to live a good life, or a happy one. Any truly loving god should accept any good person, regardless of what they believe - why would he give us the ability to reason, knowing full well it would lead so many to reject him, because all the evidence stacks up against the bible, and none for it?
Either the bible is wrong, he isn't loving, or he'll accept anybody who's not a dick. Either way, you have nothing to lose by learning more about the world around you.
And, of course, on a more personal level: Nature, reality, the universe, is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. You can only really see that beauty through coming to understand it. It'd be a shame to miss out on that because you're happy with "God did it" |
