First, when things were primitive, of course ponies were naked. Then as they grouped together and founded Equestrian civilization, they gradually became more formal, and began to wear clothes. It got to a point where every pony was wearing elaborate outfits and changing multiple times a day for multiple occasions, much like British high society in the 19th Century.
Then as time went on, probably due to Celestia desiring it, pony society lost its formality, and gradually lost its insistence on wearing clothes, to the point that in the modern age they're kind of a relic used mostly in formal occasions. |
