Practice. Think of something, then do it. Find a new library or way to do something? Try any write a program that takes advantage of it. I call it the Atari School of Learning. Back in the days of the 2600, the easiest way to come up with a game was to find a new way to write code, or a new coding technique, then you make a game that uses it. Fuck around with examples, challenge yourself to little things, try and write programs that take advantage of things you know from other subjects. Try and write a program to perform some kind of calculus wizardry you just learned. Try and make some kind of unbeatable rock-paper-scissors bot. Then make one that beats it. And so on.

The language I know best is TI-BASIC, the sole reason for this is because I could program my calculator in class when I wasn't doing anything. I even dropped $200 on a TI V200 calc so I could learn C++ better, as TI's 68K based calcs have a C++ IDE and compiler for them. Never really used it, but I had a lot of fun with that calc.

And even without knowing a ton about the language, my experience with that dinky BASIC language taught me plenty about design and structure. When I made it to my robotics class, the moment we hit the keys I was coding circles around literally everyone around me. My programs were NEVER the simplest, and almost always took up nearly *all* of our controller's memory, but I'll be damned if they weren't the most effective by far. And the size never affected performance, as all my programs were structured and segmented to allow for maximum speed with maximum effectiveness. Object oriented Programming for the fucking win.
