There is definitely massive story potential there. Not the least of which is what the elements themselves really are, where they came from, and how the sisters learned of their existence. This is all making more sense to me. It was the battle with Discord that corrupted Luna in the first place, making her bitter, angry and jealous of Celesita. They BOTH wielded the Elements against Discord, but when Luna was turned, the elements amplified against her, making the spell to banish her too powerful for even Celestia to control. Celestia never touched the Elements again knowing they were too much energy in her hooves, and it took the Mane Cast to really wield them correctly, not only defeating Nightmare Moon, but restoring the harmony between the sisters.

Without her sister, Celestia has no friends to wield the elements with, and the result was the millennial imprisonment of her sister whom she loved.
