I have drawn ponies before, and quite a few people responded positively to it. I don't do it though because I don't really feel there's a point to it. It's too easy and making them do anything that is incredibly horse-like seems out of tone with the show. If I do want to make them act horse-like rather than a character who is restricted by the abstracted, simplified horse body they are in, I would draw them to be more representational of an actual horse for a joke.

Drawing them as humans gives me a challenge since I have to constantly put my fair bit of knowledge about human anatomy to the test. There are better ways of challenging myself, sure, but in this way I know it can connect to people who want content.

I find that one of the things I love about fanfiction, at least if it's well-written, is when characters in an ensemble cast who don't normally interact get to spend time together. If it can capture the spirit of the original story, it's a neat glimpse into how the relationships we don't see, the relationships behind the scenes, play out.

A nice example of this being done in an actual show is when Wash insists on spending time with Mal in that one episode of Firefly. It was neat to see them spend time together when they normally don't, and the whole business just lampshaded the trope of certain characters in a cast never spending time with each other.

I just don't believe that the typical fanfiction idea can hold up in novel-length. People come up with an idea that may be neat but then they want to turn it into some giant epic story.

...a giant epic story about candy-colored ungulates. The grimdark ones in particular just seem like the author is trying way too hard and it does not fit with ponies at all.

It might be better if people start their idea as a short story. Work hard on it, edit it well, condense it into something that can be read in less than half an hour. It will be a good experience and will improve their writing skills greatly. If everyone loves it and thinks it could hold up in novel or even novella-length then *maybe* the author could try turning it into one.
