Firstly stop thinking that a relationship between two same gender partners is different than a normal one in anything but practicality.
With this in mind, remember what marriage symbolizes; the next step in that relationship, a devotion to that other person, promising yourself to them and all that shit. People, or at least non-sociopaths, don't get married for legal reasons, they get married because they love someone
The word 'marriage' carries the connotation of love and eternal companionship and all that junk. The moment you take that word away, it undermines the whole practice. Essentially, if you take the 'marriage' out of marriage, all you have is a legal document binding you to someone else.
That has no more a symbolism of love than a mortgage. It also has the feel of 'second-class' citizenship.
In my country we have what you are talking about. it's called a 'Civil Partnership'. It sounds soulless, lifeless and not many people get it.
i'm not even fucking sure if it has the same legal bond as marriage does. It isn't good enough |
