There was this one fic I read, I can't remember the name, where the writer started from the premise that Nightmare Moon's power and hatred were separated from her by the Elements in the pilot, but remained in the shreds of her mane and shards of her armor.
Then, when the head of Celestia's School tries to study them, her cast-off hatred infects him. Her hatred uses him to try to resurrect Nightmare Moon as an entity separate from Luna. The cult kidnaps Twilight Sparkle to use her blood, so the new NMM would be immune to the Elements of Harmony.
But the spell is interrupted and Twilight is rescued. Later, despite the traumatic memories, she goes back to the forest to find the books she was carrying when she was kidnapped. There she discovers that the interrupted spell has turned into a filly.
The filly looks like a baby Nightmare Moon, but has none of the hatred that defined her. It seems the infected headmaster assumed he didn't need to infect her. He assumed wrong.
She eventually defeats Luna's old hatred, but by that time she had listened to everyone else about how she was Nightmare Moon, and made a lot of mistakes in the meantime.
