Discord's design is inherently discordant. It's wrong, it doesn't fit, it's a mishmash, and in that, contextually, it's perfect. It's a chaotic design that reflects the chaotic nature of the character and his role, while also looking pretty cool and unusual when you get down to it. I could stand to see him a bit more menacing, maybe with elongated limbs and body, but otherwise it's pretty much spot on and it fits the style of the show easily while being intimidating to children for breaking the rules of normality in their programming.
Not only that, but the fact that he "plays by the rules", so to speak, subverts the nature of Discord and inherently becomes even more discordant - he's a controlled figure, when the expectation is that he's going to be crazy, and though he's a little eccentric, that comes off more as a foible than anything else. An eclectic character with an absolutely perfect voice actor whose performance so far has been inherently dichotomous - polarised between playful and cruel. I think in that respect it's really powerful, and definitely intimidating. His BGM so far really exacerbates that, it's powerful and fast, with a hint of threat thanks to the drums. We've seen a villain and I can guarantee that's what we'll get.
Finally, there's that element of unpredictability and insanity that DOES fit the archetype, in the mismatched eyes, the kooky expressions, the erratic movements - everything about him is Discordant, if you'll allow me the pun as an expression, and I'm absolutely, unbelievably grateful to Studio B for the efforts they've gone to to preserve the style and tone of the show as a children's show while providing an interesting, crazy villain who still has more secrets to share.
But, again, that's just me, and I'm too tired to be all that coherent at the moment, sorry! |
