In a general sense, if there's one thing Discord has that Nightmare Moon didn't have, it's potential to be something much more. NMM was pretty much doomed to be yet another Rita Repulsa resentful of her imprisonment, even if she had an air of wickedness about her when she first appeared. If this same kind of clip had been released for the pilot and showcasing Nightmare Moon, you could pretty much tell that she would be a pretty stock villain.

Discord just feels so much more unpredictable; his ambitions, if he has any, are still ambiguous; we're uncertain as to whether he has some sort of mean streak to him and undergoes a total destructive mode if things don't go his way or if he retains his jolly demeanor up until his defeat; we don't know if he's a "sore loser" in his game or if he gives concessions... it's actually quite entertaining.
