I like Applejack in that she's a strong independent character who cares for her family, and works hard to earn money, something you almost never see in a girl's cartoon. The problem is, that doesn't really make for an interesting character. On the other hoof, Rarity is much more finicky, making her more of a foil which is inherently better suited for driving cartoon plotlines.

Applejack is usually in the background, waiting to jump in and help, while the more complicated ponies are at the center of whatever conflict there is. AJ's kinda plain.

Just my 2 cents.
