Imagine you're teleported to ponyville one day. At first it's rough, but you adapt. Zecora takes you under her wing and provides food and shelter in exchange for you running errands for her. One day, on an errand to ponyville, you drop something and a cute little unicorn filly picks it up and returns it to you. In return, you pat her on the head, but to everyones horror, she starts screaming in pain and rushes to the fountain to try and clean her scalp off, but it doesn't work. Within an hour, something has burned through her skull like acid. The locals can only conclude that human skin oils are dangerous to marshmallow ponies, and twilight crafts you special gloves that you are to wear from that day forward. Why Zecora wasn't affected, noone knows. It's even possible that the filly was just allergic.

Time passes with your gloves, and eventually you come upon Lyra. She bring you into her house, which she has oddly enough modified to accomodate an upright human, and asks you a favor. Just one pet, rubbing, scratching, all over with your bare hands. No gloves.

She could die, she could not. Do you take the chance?
