Generosity means she will probably never be rich, but she's not dumb enough to make herself poor either.

Applejack: Her farm seems to be the biggest in town and has a monopoly on Ponyville's apple trade. She is also more of a capitalist than any other pony. On the other hand, she probably doesn't own any of the land yet. Until Granny Smith dies, she's just helping out the family, and not rich herself.

Okay, I got some feedback from Ponibooru and decided to unfuck my latest picture a bit. I found a few references and fixed a few of the more glaring errors so that the picture makes more sense. For those that missed the first iteration, Mrs. Cake's right foreleg (furthest away from viewer) was really fucky and Bon Bon's forelegs didn't make too much sense either, so I adjusted them a bit. Lazy edits, yes, but effective.

Fluttershy is a vet. Living in (what is for a pegasus) the outback. That means she's making a fortune from the Earth ponies.

Pinkie Pie is a event organiser. These people actually make a shit load of money. They make sure the party you want to throw is fun and the best people turn up. I'd say Pinkie is probably the richest of the ponies. And knowing how event organisers live she probably spends most of it on 'nose candy'.

Twilight is a grad student. She's got a grant from the government and is currently studying 'friendship' (or more accurately interpersonal relationships among Ponyville residents). When you consider her close ties to Princess Equestria the topic of study becomes more sinister. Twilight has modest means at the moment but is being groomed for a high placed government job.

Spike is obviously Twilights handler. Considering he's a non-pony immigrant he probably works for purely financial motives making him a mercenary. This leads credence to the fact that Twilight is studying a topic that Celestia doesn't trust her own people on.

What do you think Equestria was like 1000 years ago though? Say just after Nightmare was banished? Was it far more like a traditional high fantasy setting back then? Unicorn mages and pony adventurers and all that sort of crap?

Thats a bit farther back than I am talking. Celestia and Luna obviously had to have been in power awhile before the rise of Nightmare as they had managed to build themselves castles. So pony society at that point 1000 years ago had to be advanced enough for architecture and stoneworking on fairly large scales.
