Trixie wasn't as powerful as Twilight, yeah. They made it rather clear she easily surpassed all the other ponies in town, but next to the hideously broken Twilight, she came up really short. However, Twilight does have quite a few derp moments. Charging the Hydra was probably her second worst one. Getting flat out killed by the Cocktrice was her first. If Trixie was going to one-up Twilight in some way, Twilight would have to be derpan as usual. Or, the show gives Trixie some kind of power she didn't previously have. It worked for Pinkie.

"Zombie" episode. A spell goes awry on "The day like Halloween, but it won't be named that" where a lot of ponies are infected into craving massive amounts of sweets. Special weapons are created that heals the infected, but they are incapacitated for a while. Zecora would be the professional until she gets infected, and out of left field, Rarity would be last survivor. Pinkie Pie would be the initial infected and leader, since she loves sweets so much, she ends up becoming more stronger and faster the more she consumes. It ends with her and Rarity, with Rarity infected and Pinkie incapacitated. Rarity starts to blank out feeling the effects, wakes up, thinks it was all a dream and then Twilight brings it up. They all laugh until they name a someone who didn't come back the night before and the last image is that pony's infected face quickly covering up the whole screen with a scare chord and scream playing.

And then moms call Cartoon Network because they don't know any better to find out why the final minute scared the crap out of their kids and adult manchildren.

From what I can tell its a phenomenon that has paralleled the rise of awareness about AS itself.
