Eh, I felt the second season was kinda aimless. Trying to cram too many sub-plots and love triangles into one space, it started to feel more like a teen soap opera than the brisk, fast-paced drama-comedy the first season presented. I liked a lot of the songs better, though, since they showcased more of the fringe cast rather than "WE HAVE TWO LEAD SINGERS SPAM SPAM SPAM."
Incidentally, this is pretty congruous with how I don't want MLP season 2 to be handled. Glee's issue was that they tried to make it too serious than it really needed to be, maybe because they wanted the show to compete more with other primetime drama series in its timeslot, fuck if I know. A show about a high school show choir deserves plots like Sue marrying herself, Puck romancing the obese nihilist girl, and other absurdities, not the death of Sue's sister. A love interest here, a fight there, but nothing that really needs to drag down an entire episode and, by extension, the entire show. MLP's in a pretty good spot, though, seeing as it doesn't have that same "serious" stigma and instead can retain its light-hearted and innocent attitude we know and love. |
