There is an inworld magical disaster that turns Equestria into a wasteland. How does it ACTUALLY look if we were going for more show accurate setting?

Let's say, Celestia falls into magical disaster and the sun drops from the sky, torches Equestria with heat and all kinds of radiation. Luna ends up sending the sun back into the sky and vanishes, dead or worse. Many ponies survived in caves they modified into vaults. What do they find when they come out?

i've been using placeholders up until now, like gnashers for carnivores and gnawers for herbivores. A weird kind of naming system that's somewhat similar to the traditional, like triceratops becomes triceras, and tyrannosaurus rex becomes rex tyran. It's all rather clunky in writing though.

The naming system seems a bit clunky, but I can't think of anything more appropriate. Sorry! If you have to have a naming system at all it'll have to be based on either that convention, or something new and unexpected.

it's more of a cultural divide than anything. the herbivores are no less capable than the carnivores in military sectors, but cultural norms dictate they're more likely to be merchants or scholars. carnivores are very honor-bound and militaristic, but not necessarily in the stereotypical negative way. There's some slight tension but most of them aren't particularly mindful. Of course that tension has a way of....building....during the story
