I think its much more likely that the Everfree and the ruins there were the scene of not only Luna's banishment, but the fight leading up to it, and the forces runleashed by two goddesses trying to kill or subdue one another essentially turned the area into a scarred wild magic zone. I think of Equestria being permeated by a sort of magical harmonious aether that could be represented as a 2 dimensional surface, and the Everfree is a huge fucking crater in that surface.

Give it a go for several chapters. You'll know pretty quickly whether it suits you. Its world exploration and lots of little quests with an overarching storyline and regular plot revelations. Definately not as good if you haven't played Fallout 3 or New Vegas (3 preferred.)
