I've had a recent epiphany in regards to the world of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. It relates to Cutie Mark Failure Insanity Syndrome, the condition in which ponies go insane if they fail at special cutie mark related skill or that talent falls into doubt. CMFIS may just fan speculation and not intentional by the show's creators, but it would explain a lot of things.
As we know, the ponies keep a tight control on their environment. They monitor and regulate the weather, *all* of the flora and fauna (not just the agricultural ones), the day and night cycle, and even the seasons themselves. While this might seem like a funny little quirk of the setting, it would be absolutely necessary if CMFIS was a real thing. A lot of ponies cuite marks are related to the growing of certain crops, but if the weather or the season was unrelible, a sudden cold snap or prolonged winter could cause a lot of ponies not just go hungry, but start fliping out because they were unable to provide what they were magically destined to provide. Any number of natural disasers or extreme variations in the environment(uncertain weather, uncertain seasons, over- or under- populations of animals) could have major reprocussions on their society as a whole as one group of ponies losing it could have a domino effect on others.
In that light, Princess Celestia's supposedly "extreme" punishment of sending Princess Luna to the Moon for wanting to cause eternal night seems a little less extreme. As causing night to last forever could possibly cause the entire pony population to GO INSANE! |
